“Competent. Caring. Cognizant. These are just a few of the many positive attributes displayed during my husbands stay at the vent-rehabilitation unit at the Berlin Nursing Home. Following an extended stay at PRMC, Willy was admitted to the vent unit to help facilitate [ventilator] weaning and to provide his family with home-vent instruction, direction and support. The entire staff, which would include respiratory, nursing, medical and custodial personnel, entered my husband’s room w/ genuine warmth and interest while addressing both the patient’s and family’s needs and concerns. After discharge, several of the staff have stayed in touch with our family as an expression, we believe, of sincere concern and friendship, not mere duty. Recently, during Hurricane Irene, the weather forecasters predicted a possible 4-5 day power outage; the day before this news, I received a call from the respiratory supervisor recommending I readmit Willy during the hurricane for his own safety since he continued to require [ventilator] support. Because of the unit’s concern, foresight and [proactive response], my husband’s readmission ran smoothly which promoted a sense of security and reduced the stress for both the patient AND his family. As a result, my husband’s care during the hurricane was not compromised and he is home safe and sound. The people make the unit the success it is!!"
